Cheyanne Davis detains Uber driver, steals from Westfield Kmart

An Uber driver who picked up a passenger in Lalor was in for a wild ride when she forced him to drive her around Melbourne’s northern suburbs and stole his phone so he couldn’t call for help. And police were just as baffled by the woman’s odd behaviour.

The court heard Davis held the Uber driver against his will, refusing to leave his car.

A woman held an Uber driver against his will, forcing him to drive her around and taking his phone to stop him speaking to police when he repeatedly tried to get help.

Cheyanne Davis then led police on a wild-goose chase when they did get on scene, lying about her identity and getting them to take her to several houses she falsely claimed were hers.

The 25-year-old fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 3, having been in jail since the incident in Lalor on May 6.

Cheyanne Davis has pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard Davis was drunk when she held the driver against his will, making him drive her to several different locations, and refusing to get out of his car.

Leading Senior Constable Jeff Stewart said the driver called police several times but they couldn’t make sense of what he was saying because he was arguing with Davis.

When police tried to return the driver’s calls to establish what was happening and where they were, Davis took his phone and cancelled the calls, the court heard.

The driver eventually managed to get out of the car with his keys, leaving her inside.

When police arrived and found her still in the car, the driver told police he didn’t want to press charges, but wanted to make sure Davis got home safely.

The court heard Davis then gave police a fake name — which turned out to be her sister’s — and had police escort her to several addresses she said were hers for about 45 minutes.

She then took officers to a Lalor address and spoke to someone at the door who knew her, before they told her to leave.

Davis then tried to escape from police, before they rechecked her identity and discovered she had lied about who she was, with the photo of the person she claimed to be not bearing a huge likeness to her.

Officers then found IDs and cards in her wallet in various names, and determined she was Cheyanne Davis, who had failed to answer bail.

The court heard on February 5 Davis had stolen $118 worth of health and beauty products from the Kmart store at Westfield Plenty Valley, where she was caught by staff.

Davis’ lawyer Chris McLennan told the court his client, who was pleading guilty to all matters before the court, was lucky the Uber driver hadn’t pursued charges.

He said Davis struggled with alcohol abuse and had been a user of GHB and methamphetamine.

But he said she was getting on the right track and would move in with her father in Ivanhoe upon her release.

The court heard Davis had previously been jailed and “failed abysmally” on a community corrections order, which was breached by the new charges before the court.

Magistrate Ian Alger sentenced her to the 28 days she had already been in jail for the crimes, and ordered she serve a further 14 days for violating her corrections order.
