Bundoora Square: Jayden Patterson accused of acid attack

Acid was thrown at a man’s face in a disturbing attack outside a northern suburbs shopping centre, a court has heard — and it wasn’t just the alleged victim who suffered.

The alleged attack occurred at the entrance to Bundoora Square.

Two people had to be taken to hospital after a man was allegedly attacked with acid at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s north in the middle of the day.

A man was at the entrance to Bundoora Square on January 27 when an associate allegedly threw a caustic liquid onto his face, with the liquid’s fumes being so strong they left a witness with breathing difficulties, Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court has heard.

The alleged attacker, Jayden Patterson, 31, fronted the court on Thursday, April 23, also accused of living at a Doreen house where homemade firearms have allegedly been found.

The court heard the methamphetamine and cannabis user allegedly started a confrontation with an associate outside the shops about 3pm.

Senior Constable Max Angus said Patterson called for a female companion to bring over his backpack, from which he pulled a clear plastic bottle.

He allegedly approached the other man and threatened to damage his nearby motorcycle, saying, “I’m going to douse your bike”.

The pair allegedly got in a scuffle as the man tried to defend his motorcycle, before Patterson allegedly opened the bottle and deliberately splashed liquid onto the man’s face, allegedly causing a blister burn under his right eye.

The court heard the MFB and paramedics rushed to help the man on scene, while a witness who came forward to help began suffering breathing difficulties from the strong caustic vapours of the liquid.

Both the man and the witness were taken to hospital by ambulance, with the injured man telling police it was Patterson who allegedly attacked him.

Another witness of the alleged attack told police he felt a sensation to his nose and throat and prickling on his face and arms, which he had previously experienced when being exposed to a caustic chemical.

Senior Constable Max Angus said police also had CCTV of the attack.

He told the court the unemployed father-of-three was a danger to the safety and welfare of any other person, saying Patterson allegedly also lived at a Doreen home where homemade guns, explosives, weapons and drugs had been found.

But Patterson strongly denied living at the house, saying he lived with his partner and children.

Magistrate Michael McNamara released him on strict bail conditions, saying he hoped Patterson knew how lucky he was.

“You have got to be on your best behaviour,” he said.
