MEET the 14-year-old soccer prodigy with a dream to play for the Matildas.
Thornbury schoolgirl Nia Stamatopoulos took up soccer in 2015, but was quickly recognised for her elite talents, which led to a stint as captain of the Victorian U15 team at the National Youth Championship.
“I was very honoured to be seen as a leader by my coaches — it means you have to lead by example, know how to communicate and always show respect,” she said.
Stamatopoulos, who now plays for Northcote City, said soccer was her main passion in life.
“I love everything about it — the challenges you face, the friendships you make but most importantly that I get to do what I love most,” she said.
The teen said she wanted to one day play for the Matildas but didn’t hesitate to cast her eye across the pond.
“My ultimate dream is to play for Liverpool as I am a massive supporter,” she said.
Nia Stamatopoulos is a Leader Sports Star nominee.
