A WOOLSHED-cum-bar-and-music-space has been recognised in an international architecture award.

Howler, in Brunswick, has received a high commendation in the Eat-Drink-Design Awards, covering Australia and New Zealand.

The bar was designed by owner Brendan Brogan and Splinter Society Architecture’s Chris Stanley.

“He and I spent a year developing the concept, the concept being a broad arts and music venue as well as being a bar,” Mr Stanley said.

The design includes a large, outdoor space with no clear distinction between inside and outside, and sunshine during the daytime and lights to create a “fantasy” feel at night.

“There’s space out the back for full theatre productions and also a range of other, smaller bars and more intimate spaces,” Mr Stanley said.

“The garden space is amazing.

“It was a low-cost build but it has a lot of texture and warmth and atmosphere.”

The Eat-Drink-Design Awards recognises innovation and excellence in the design of all different types of hospitality and retail premises.

The awards cover Australia and New Zealand, with six different categories from high-end restaurants to hole-in-the-wall cafes and pop-ups.

Howler was highly commended in the Best Bar Design category.
