KARATE powerhouse Sabah Sultan has punched above her weight to medal at a world tournament.

The Broadmeadows teenager won bronze at the WKO Japan Athletic Cup last month in the open division 50kg and over category.

Despite being the lightest in her division and competing against girls more than 30kg heavier, it didn’t faze this karate kid.

“When you punch that weight goes on to the other person,” she said. “When you don’t have a lot of weight behind you it can be really hard but I still pushed through.”

Sabah, 15, said she was proud of the result.

“I think I performed pretty well,” she said. “It was the best fight I’ve ever done. These girls were really advanced and have won world tournaments before and then I just come in and get bronze.

Sabha, from Fighting Arts Fitness Centre in Glenroy, is also an instructor, teaching primary-school-aged children.
