A Bundoora family who used a house-sitting website to have their property looked after while they went interstate ended up having their motorcycle stolen by their sitter’s ex-boyfriend.
They came home to find a letter from the house sitter explaining their $16,000 motorcycle had been taken from their garage, Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court has heard.
The thief, Brayden Filiti, fronted court on Monday, August 3, over a number of incidents, including vehicle thefts and stealing credit cards he took on spending sprees.
The court heard his ex-girlfriend was looking after a house in Bundoora from December 28 to January 4 under an arrangement made through website mindahome.com.au.
Leading Senior Constable Ken Marsh said during her stay she invited Filiti to the house, when he went into the garage without permission and stole the orange motorcycle.
A photo of Filiti riding the motorcycle was posted on Facebook on January 8 before police found the bike, but not him, at his Burnside Heights home on January 20.
The court heard Filiti also sped away from police in Preston on March 22 about 9.18pm after they saw him leaving Northland in a Hyundai that had been stolen from Brunswick the day before.
He then stole $30 petrol from Caltex Coburg while driving the car, before police found it at a Reservoir address the next day.
Police entered the property and found the laundry door barricaded shut and Filiti hiding in the backyard.
He resisted arrest before police found 0.3g of meth, a pocket knife, a stolen licence and Medicare card, scissors, screwdrivers and pliers in the bumbag he was wearing.
The court heard on January 30 he had smashed a car window at South Morang railway station and stolen a credit card, which he took on a spending spree at Westfield Plenty Valley.
He also stole credit cards from cars in Coburg and Pascoe Vale in February, which he went on to use.
Filiti also took out a traffic sign when he was driving carelessly without a licence in Taylors Lakes about 7.30pm on October 11 and broke into three vehicles in Galada Ave, Parkville in January 2018.
The court heard the 25-year-old had been using large amounts of GHB and methamphetamine daily, and had spent about six years of his adult life in jail.
Magistrate Helen Murphy said Filiti’s criminal history was “appalling” for his age and she was “staggered” by how much time he’d spent in custody.
The court heard Filiti had become a father in June while he was in jail.
Ms Murphy said she hoped his daughter could be the thing to make him turn his life around.
“Kids grow up really quickly,” she said
She sentenced him to the 133 days he had spent in jail, releasing him on a 12-month community corrections order.
