The Boulevard Christmas lights have been cancelled because of COVID-19 safety fears.

Thousands of families normally walk down the Ivanhoe street each Christmas, viewing the decorated houses.

The popular event has been running for more than half a century.

But in a statement on its website, Banyule Council said the virus “has affected how we work, live and gather”.

It said after careful consideration, discussion and direction from Victoria Police, along with local residents regarding COVID-19 safety, it would not be encouraging attendance at the event or providing traffic management support.

“We have all needed to adapt to various restrictions and altered events, and Boulevard Lights 2020 is no exception,” the council said.

“We understand that the event is loved by many however the safety of our community is our priority.

“With thousands attending The Boulevard each year, the event poses a significant health and safety risk not only to our community but to all of Victoria.

“Although we cannot come together this year, we can still celebrate by taking our Carols by Candlelight event online this year.”
