A second generation baker who wanted to bring a “slice of Italy” to the people of Hadfield has revealed the secret to keeping his loyal customers happy.

It’s all about dishing up authentic pizza topped with the freshest ingredients.

Antonio Vescio’s dedication to “keeping it real” has earnt his bakery-cum-pizzeria the crown of Moreland’s best pizza in the Delicious Local campaign.

Vescio said while his family had run North St Bakery in Hadfield for about 30 years, before a trip to Naples to learn the art of pizza making led him to set up Pane e Pizza on the site about six years ago.

While in Naples, Vescio learnt the secrets and techniques for making a traditional Neapolitan pizza which have been passed down through generations.

As a result, Pane e Pizza by North Street Bakery is one of only eight venues in Melbourne to be accredited by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, an organisation tasked with protecting the tradition and uniqueness of the true neapolitan pizza.

Vescio said one of the best parts about his pizzas is the dough, which is made from flour imported from Italy and fermented for 48 hours before being topped with delicious fresh ingredients and wood-fired.

“The result is this beautiful light crust made with very little yeast, which doesn’t blow up in your stomach, he said.

“We top our pizzas with sauced imported from Italy and the best and freshest ingredients I can find here.”

Vescio said the margarita was his favourite dish — and by far the most popular among customers.

“It’s the best way to taste the dough and all the ingredients,” he said.

“It’s simple and fresh and speaks for itself without things piled on top.

“If you can get the margarita right and tasting great then you’ll be able to make any other pizza.”

Also taking out top honours for Moreland in the Delicious Local campaign is Coburg North’s Urban Pizza.

It’s a small, mostly takeaway pizza join that packs a mighty punch.

One customer said “the diet doesn’t exist after finding this place”.

Another said she ordered 15 pizzas takeaway for a party and every single one was top quality.

The crowd favourite is the Peri Peri Chicken and Avocado.
