Two Melbourne men — who police allege have links to organised crime — have been charged with a series of drug trafficking offences as part of a major federal police investigation.
Moonee Ponds man Anastasio Giorgi, 26, and Marcus Cini, 25, of Keilor East, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday — a day after the pair was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine.
It comes after federal police executed search warrants at their respective homes in September this year as part of Operation Kraken.
Mr Cini was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity and possessing cocaine.
He was bailed to return to court for contest mention in March next year.
Dressed in a white hoodie inside the courtroom, Mr Giorgi was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of cocaine and dealing with proceeds of crime, after $30,000 in cash was allegedly found in his bedroom during the police raid in September.
Both men were also charged with failing to provide police with passwords for a series of encrypted mobile phones found during the search warrants.
No drugs were found at Mr Giorgi’s address though police allege he had a “more serious role” than his co-accused and had at times “instructed” Mr Cinni on how to “cut up and distribute cocaine”.
Police opposed Mr Giorgi’s bail due to him allegedly being more involved in the operation than Mr Cinni — whom they did not oppose bail for.
Mobile devices seized by police allegedly contained conversations on the encrypted app Threema with others with usernames “Mr Hollywood” and “Tony Montana”, which police allege culminated in the two accused picking up about 0.25kg of cocaine from outside a McDonalds.
Mr Giorgi was also bailed and will return to court next year.
