ANGIE McMahon. Remember that name because chances are we'll be hearing a lot more from the young singer-songwriter chosen to open for Bon Jovi.

The 19-year-old Alphington resident and Tasmanian Jessie Teinaki were chosen from 10 finalists in the Telstra Road To Discovery Music Awards final to tour Australia with the US power rockers and perform at massive stadium shows.

But those who don't have a ticket for Bon Jovi need go no further than the upcoming Music in the Wetlands Festival in Alphington to see why McMahon won the hotly contested competition.

McMahon said playing at venues such as Etihad Stadium with a capacity of 55,000 was unlike anything she'd ever done before.

"I'm pretty nervous but I'm really excited," she told the Leader. "When I get on the stage I'm going to have all that space in front of me - I'm hoping it will bring out my best."

McMahon wasn't born when Bon Jovi hit the airwaves in 1983, but she grew up listening to classic rock due to her father's influence.

"Dad used to take us on long drives and we'd yell along to songs from Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Meatloaf in the car.

"Everyone loves singing along to songs like Livin' On a Prayer." McMahon said Fabric, the band she plays with, was soon to release an EP, but that she was yet to release her own songs.

"I haven't recorded but I'm hoping I'll be able to get some of the people in the crowd to like me on Facebook. There'll be a lot of people there and Bon Jovi has really diverse fans so hopefully I'll get some."

McMahon is an accomplished songwriter, pianist, guitarist and trumpet player, but it's her strong soulful vocals that single her out as extraordinary.

Have a listen at youtube.com/angiemcmahon or at Music in the Wetlands with fellow singer-songwriter Shannen McInerney from 12.30pm, 1 View St, Alphington on Sunday, November 17.
