The site of Broadmeadows SES long-awaited $2.8 million new base has been unveiled in Fawkner, with works to start within months.
The 5000sq m station will be built next to the Fawkner police station on Sydney Rd after negotiating the land’s release with the Fawkner Cemeteries Trust.
It will include a six-bay motor room, kitchen, office space and IT and communications equipment and service Moreland and Hume.
Works will start in the coming months and it is expected construction will be finished by the end of next year.
Pascoe Vale state Labor MP Lizzie Blandthorn said the new site would have a great presence on Sydney Rd.
“We have been working with the local SES and the Fawkner cemetery to achieve this outcome for some time and it’s great to finally put a stake in the ground,” she said.
“The local volunteers do great work for our community and now they will have first class facilities to operate from.”
The unit responds to about 540 requests for assistance a year, and is the busiest in the state for calls to assist Victoria Police.
Police and Emergency Services minister Lisa Neville said the Broadmeadows SES unit had a unique relationship with police.
