A Sunbury teenager stabbed a man before he and a friend used a crowbar and a boxcutter to rob someone at Sunbury railway station in the middle of the afternoon, a court has heard.

Zeathan Golden-Hatzar also sped on the wrong side of the road in morning traffic, narrowly avoiding hitting oncoming cars, and used his head to smash a car windscreen, the County Court has heard.

The now 20-year-old was sentenced before the court on Wednesday, August 18, having been in custody for more than a year.

The court heard Golden-Hatzar stabbed a man in the thigh when the man tried to intervene in an argument between the 19-year-old and their friend on April 16, 2019.

Golden-Hatzar had been arguing with his friend at a house in Burke Rd, Sunbury early in the afternoon, with the friend having called his friend, the victim, to come to help get Golden-Hatzar to leave.

The victim then got into an argument with Golden-Hatzar in the kitchen, before he grabbed Golden-Hatzar by the shirt and pushed him away.

The court heard Golden-Hatzar, who was on bail, then stabbed the victim in the upper thigh with a knife and ran and locked himself in the bathroom.

The victim was treated for a 5cm deep wound at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Golden-Hatzar then assaulted a man at 7-Eleven Sunbury about 9.30pm on May 6.

The man was arguing with a woman when Golden-Hatzar punched the man in the face, then punched the man’s car windscreen, breaking the glass, punched the petrol bowser and smashed the windscreen again with his head.

A week later, on May 13, he and a friend approached a man waiting in the bus exchange at Sunbury railway station about 4.10pm, brandishing a crowbar and box cutter.

They stole the victim’s phone and bumbag, which contained his wallet.

Golden-Hatzar was also one of three men who robbed a man on Paisley St about 7.50am on May 7, taking his phone, wallet and headphones, before he used the victim’s bank cards at a milk bar.

He was also charged with several incidents where he broke into cars and tried to break into a car, stole a Subaru from Diggers Rest, used stolen bank cards in Keilor East, and stole petrol.

During two incidents he left black balaclavas with his DNA on them in cars.

The court heard Golden-Hatzar had pleaded guilty to all offences, and was also appealing an eight-month jail sentence he’d been given for when he sped away from police in Sunbury about 8.50am on July 11, 2018.

While his licence was disqualified, he sped down the the wrong side of the road, narrowly avoiding a collision, before he was involved in a crash at Sunbury Square carpark and fled the scene.

The court heard Golden-Hatzar was exposed to violence as a child, had bee using methamphetamine from a young age, and had met his father in prison.

Judge Michael O’Connell said Golden-Hatzar was different from other young criminals because he had extended family who had chartered a different life course and were willing to support him.

He sentenced Golden-Hatzar to 36 months in jail, with a non-parole period of 18 months, noting he had already served 481 days and saying it would have been a four years and three month sentence but for the guilty plea.

Judge O’Connell reduced the sentence being appealed by two months.
