VCAT tells Shayher Group to redesign 19-storey Pentridge tower

THE developers of the former Pentridge Prison site have been sent back to the drawing board and told to redesign a 19-storey tower planned for the site — and they’ve got two months to do it.
The tower at 19 Pentridge Blvd was to be primarily used for a hotel and apartments but was knocked back by Moreland Council in July last year due to concerns about its height and advertising signage near the top of the tower.

Shayher Group, the developer, referred the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Not happy with the designs, the tribunal gave the developers 60 days from February 12 to amend current architectural plans and resubmit them to VCAT.
If plans are not resubmitted within that period, the permit will be denied.
According to the written order from VCAT, it found “the majority of aspects” acceptable.
But it held “unresolved concerns regarding the design and appearance of the balance of the tower above ground level”, particularly relating to a wider width of the building near the top of the tower.
Council director of planning and economic development Kirsten Coster said the council was “pleased” with VCAT’s decision not to approve the tower but held concerns it could still go ahead.
“Council’s view remains that the tower should not be supported at it’s current height,” Ms Coster said.
Shayher already has a permit – granted by the State Government – for two buildings of 19 and six storeys at 21 Pentridge Blvd.
Shayher Group spokesman Anthony Goh said they would continue to work with VCAT to redesign the building.
“Shayher Group is committed to delivering the vision for Pentridge, one which will drive economic and employment growth locally while preserving this asset for generations to come,” Mr Goh said.
