Sunbury came together to farewell a favourite son last week. Former East Sunbury Cricket Club coach Jessy Carroll passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Club president Mark Wilkins — who had known Carroll for about seven years — paid tribute to the popular local. “He came across as a guy who was pretty confident in himself,” he said.

“He never feared anyone and he brought that sort of game to the club. “

Wilkins said they were values Carroll instilled in friends and players.

“Jessy said no matter who they are or what they are, we can do better. It was what he brought to coaching,” he said.

“Just believe in yourself.”

Carroll was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma in 2015 while overseas.

The pace bowler took over the reigns coaching the Thunder in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association between 2016 and 2018.

Wilkins paid tribute to his friend’s ability to get along with everyone.

“He took everyone under his wing. It was just amazing,” he said.

“He didn’t just walk into the room and walk up to the three or four guys he knew. He spoke to everyone. He had time for everyone.”

Carroll was also remembered for his “absolute passion” for cricket.

“He’d play seven days a week if he could,” Wilkins told the Leader.

“His family are great too. They would bend over backwards to help anyone.”
