Traditional Hindu festival of lights Diwali to be held in Footscray for the first time

INDIA’S famous festival of lights, Diwali, will brighten up the inner-west this month.

INDIA’S  famous festival of lights will brighten up the inner-west this month.

Footscray Diwali will be the first time the traditional Hindu festival – which celebrates the victory of light over darkness – will be run in the suburb and will bring the community together through music, dance and food.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS: WHAT IS DIWALI? 

Organiser and Indian Cultural Association of Victoria president Raj Saini said the association hoped people would enjoy the celebration.

“We are very excited to bring all the magic and wonder of India’s much-loved Diwali­ to Footscray for the first time,” Mr Saini said.

“We hope to bring all the culture, nostalgia and celebration that are synonymous with Diwali in India.”

Among the features of Footscray Diwali include Bollywood dancing, cultural performances, children’s entertainment, traditional Indian clothing and jewellery stores, and food stalls.

There will also be a fireworks display at 8.15pm.

The event is at Footscray Park on October 22 from 4pm to 10pm.
