A school bus driver has been caught speeding past a school just hours after a teacher was caught driving more than 50km/h over the speed limit.

Fawkner Highway Patrol pulled over the 24-year-old female teacher from Glenroy, who was travelling at 96km/h in a 40km/h zone, outbound on Pascoe Vale Rd in a Mercedes Benz C250.

A speeding teacher was caught on Pascoe Vale Rd on Monday morning, hours before a bus driver was nabbed.
A speeding teacher was caught on Pascoe Vale Rd on Monday morning, hours before a bus driver was nabbed.

The driver was caught across the road from Strathmore Secondary College, at 8.35am on Monday morning.

Police noticed the teacher was driving erratically, weaving between lanes at high speed in an area surrounded by school children.

The woman was charged with speeding and other traffic related offences and had her vehicle impounded for 30 days at a cost to her of $878.

That afternoon, highway patrol officers caught a 53-year-old driver of a school bus travelling at 58km/h in the 40km zone.

The Chadstone man was issued a penalty infringement notice for $645 and three demerit points.

There were no children on the bus at the time.

Sgt Pickering said of the bus incident: “This is one of those incidents that leaves us shaking our heads, it has occurred right in the peak of school drop-off time. There are zero excuses for this. If something goes wrong at these speeds in a school zone it would have horrific consequences”.

He said another motorist was busted driving 51km/h over the limit in the same spot this morning — also during peak drop-off time.

The 28-year-old Truganina man was clocked at 91 km/h on Pascoe Vale Rd, outside Strathmore Secondary College at 8:48am today.

The man had his vehicle impounded and will face speeding charges.

Sgt Pickering said the man was one of 12 to be busted outside the school flaunting a school zone since Monday morning, including four on Tuesday.

He said all the drivers caught were travelling at least 15km/h over the limit.

“It’s only for a short period of time you need to do the 40, so just slow down so everyone can get home safely,” Sgt Pickering said.

“We will continue to be very active in the school zones in the morning and afternoon.”

Moonee Ponds police Senior Sergeant Ian Jones said the area was a hotspot for speeding.

Last week, Moonee Valley police began Operation Coyote Results, focusing on school zone speeding and driver distraction, such as using mobile phones.

Almost 40 infringement notices were issued for speeding, using a phone while driving, failing to obey traffic control signal, and following too close.

Out of 21 drivers caught speeding, 17 were in school zones and five resulted in a licence suspension; one of those people was travelling at 98km/h in a 60km zone.
