A former archaeologist was off her medication when she keyed a vehicle after an argument in a shopping centre car park.
Jasmyne Kadlecik pleaded guilty at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to intentionally causing damage following an incident at Watergardens Shopping Centre in 2021.
On December 20, the 52-year-old was attempting to park her car at Taylors Lakes shopping centre car park as another woman was getting out of her car.
The court heard an argument broke out between the two before Kadlecik parked a few spots further down.
The victim remained in her car before she heard screeching across the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
CCTV obtained by police by Watergardens showed the mum-of-four keying the car.
The victim went to the Keilor Downs police station and also obtained a quote for repairs totalling $650.
Police prosecutors told the court that during initial questioning, Kadlecik denied damaging the car and said she dropped a coin near the car and tapped on the window when she saw the woman inside.
In court, Kadlecik’s lawyer said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder two decades ago and the offending took place within an eight-day period she was off her medication due to unavailability.
She said her client worked as an archaeologist before she was placed on a disability pension due to health issues.
Magistrate Kay Robertson said Kadlecik was under a lot of stress at the time of the offending and still was today.
“You know you go off the rails when you aren’t taking the medication so make sure you stay on it and continue to see a doctor,” Magistrates Robertson said.
She was placed on a 12-month adjourned undertaking and ordered to pay $650 through the court. A conviction was recorded.
