Sunbury students land top marks in international math competition

Two budding mathematicians from Sunbury Downs College have come out on top in an International Maths Olympiad.
Year Eight students Lily Morgan and Lachlan McDougall placed in the top percentage of students in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads.
Lily placed in the top 2 per cent with a score of 23 out of 25, while Lachlan placed in the top 10 per cent with a score of 18 out of 25.
The competition was open to Year Seven and Eight students in Australia and New Zealand.
Lily said she has always loved mathematics.
“There’s a misconception that it’s just about numbers, but really it’s about logic and patterns,” she said.

The budding math whiz said the questions looked very difficult on the first glance, but she was able to power through.
“You would always find a pattern or a way of thinking about them that made it very simple,” Lily said.
Sunbury Downs College had 40 students take part in the competition.
