A father-son pair will prove that taking on new challenges after a stroke is more than possible as they charge through Run Melbourne on Sunday.

Cameron Lomini will push his father Domenico on the 5km course of the run, along with 25 other friends and family, including Cameron’s mother Elizabeth, as part of team Not Fast Just Furious.

As they were watching television at their Bundoora home last year, Elizabeth noticed Domenico began to dribble and his face was drooping.

“I said to him, you’re having a stroke and he just said ‘no’,” she said.

The group will raise money for the Stroke Foundation as they tackle the walk, with Domenico to provide music for the group.

Domenico is also undertaking kidney dialysis but painstaking rehab brought him back to walking short distances, while he continues to attend concerts and events.

“You lose all your independence when you have a stroke and it’s hard when you remember all these things you can’t do anymore,” he said.

“But just doing the rehab, I look forward to it. You’ve got to stay positive.

“You can relearn these things even if they are difficult, it’s relearning everything.”

Cameron, from Brunswick, said the team wanted to spread the message that life doesn’t stop after a stroke or with a disability.

“If you’ve got a good network behind you, you can do anything, you just have to do it differently,” he said.

“You’ve got to move on now and just get on with it.

“Run Melbourne won’t know what hit them.”
