Street Watch Sunbury & Macedon Ranges: Police break up hoon gatherings

SUNBURY police have confronted two hoon gatherings in recent weeks, among other incidents in our Street Watch column.

SUNBURY Police have encountered two hoon gatherings in and around a Horne St kebab shop in recent weeks.

Police launched Operation Defusing last Wednesday where 200 to 250 attended with cars doing burnouts in carparks.

A team of police resources including a police car, divisional van, Fawkner Highway control and booze bus broke up last Wednesday’s gathering where they issued 34 penalty notices and made three impounds.

Police also conducted 58 breath tests, 24 preliminary oral fluid tests and 562 vehicle checks.

Sgt John Letchford said it was clear by social media posts the second meet was organised after police broke up the first one on August 3.

“It was an immature act of petulance,” he said.

“We will be waiting for them if they come again and we’d be considering bringing sheriff department officers down to see whether there are outstanding penalty notices,” he said.
