RELIEF could be just around the corner for frustrated Sunbury motorists with a study to begin exploring options for easing congestion at a notorious roundabout.

State Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury state Labor MP Josh Bull last Thursday announced a $15,000 study to look into options for relieving traffic at the Horne St and Gap Rd roundabout.

About 27,000 vehicles travel on Horne St each day, with a further 18,000 on Gap Rd.

Those numbers, combined with boomgates at a level crossing 200m south of the intersection closing several times each day, result in major traffic jams, especially during school and work peak times.

Mr Donnellan said a final solution to fix the bottleneck was expected to be finalised at the end of the year.

There have being eight casualty crashes at the intersection in the five years December 31, 2014.

“There is nothing worse than being stuck in traffic and that’s why we’re working to fix this intersection,” he said.

Mr Bull said he saw the extent of the problem first hand while campaigning prior to the last year’s state election from an early voting centre near the roundabout.

“The Horne St and Gap Rd intersection has been an ongoing headache for Sunbury residents and we’re now working to come up with a solution,” Mr Bull said.

“Locals have consistently raised this issue with me and I am determined to find a solution to fixing it.

“Viable engineering proposals will be looked at to reduce congestion and improve safety.”

The intersection, which previously had traffic lights, has consistently been identified by SunburyLeader readers in RACV Red Spot surveys as one of Melbourne’s worst intersections.
