VTCA: Round 2 Team of the Week including Trent Lawford and Pishan Hewage

From young guns to lower division stars, there were huge performers in the VTCA across the weekend. See who made our Team of the Week.

Should Aussies copy England's white-ball tactics

As the Victorian Turf Cricket Association almost got back to full playing capacity there were a series of stunning performances across the competition.

Yarraville Club star Trent Lawford put on a batting masterclass at the top of the order in Senior Division to score 151 runs.

Meanwhile, the best figures of the weekend belonged to Caroline Springs’ Gavin McCallum who took 5-15 in Division 3.

DONOVAN PELL (Westmeadows, Senior Division)

The Warriors’ captain-coach put together a stunning display against Keilor as he and his opening partner batted their way through the entire innings. Pell finished with 112 runs from 122 balls in an innings which included 9 boundaries and 4 sixes. He also rolled the arm over but didn’t pick up a wicket finishing with figures of 0-29 from five overs.

TRENT LAWFORD (Yarraville Club, Senior Division)

Set a new personal best in Yarraville Club colours after hitting 151 runs from 86 balls on Saturday. The former Big Bash cult hero hit Aberfeldie’s bowlers to all parts of the ground in an innings which included 7 fours and 15 sixes.

PISHAN HEWAGE (PEGS, Division 1)

Despite putting together a brilliant century of 119 runs from 118 balls, Hewage was unable to get the job done for his side. He was the last wicket to fall in the five-run defeat to Sunshine. He also finished with 1-44 with the ball to provide an all-round contribution to his side’s effort. Saturday was Hewage’s first century for PEGS and backed up his half-century in the opening game. He is the second PEGS player to score a First XI century this season after Carlos Maynard did last weekend.

SAM YOUNGHUSBAND (Moonee Valley, Division 4)

Moonee Valley might have been beaten at the weekend but Younghusband’s efforts can’t have gone unnoticed. He produced a patient 76 runs from 98 balls when his side needed it most, able to bat most of the way through the innings. His half-century was his second in as many matches to start the season.

THIWANKA KEKULAWALA (Melton South, Division 5)

The Royals were able to power to a big win over competition newcomers Burnside Springs and it was Kekulawala’s performance which put his side in a good position. He finished unbeaten on 101 after coming in at number three with his side in some early trouble. He has made an impressive start to life with his new club.

JARROD MILCZAK (Pascoe Vale Hadfield, Division 3)

What a start to the season this man and his team are enjoying. In Saturday’s victory over Sunshine Heights, Milczak finished with his highest score since the 2017-18 season before backing it up with figures of 2-9. It followed on from an opening round performance of 58 runs and 5-28.

JOSEPH CONLIN (East Coburg, Division 5)

Conlin arguably couldn’t have performed much better as East Coburg made it two wins from two. He produced an impressive unbeaten 67 with the bat before finishing with 2-26 from eight overs to guide his side to a big win over Sunshine YCW.

GAVIN MCCALLUM (Caroline Springs, Division 3)

Had the best figures of any First XI player in the VTCA across the weekend after a career day of 5-15. Already has seven wickets to his name for the season.

MAX ROUVRAY (Point Cook, Division 3)

Did just about everything for Point Cook at the weekend. The young gun had the highest score of any teammate with 35 runs from 50 balls despite coming in at number eight. He then took 5-23 to guide his side to their first win of the season.

ROMESH KALUARACHCHI (St Andrews Pascoe Vale, Division 2)

Continued on his excellent start to the season as St Andrews Pascoe Vale opened its account with a win over Kingsville. Kaluarachchi finished with 4-23 in just over six overs while also adding an important 18 runs with the bat. He took three wickets in the opening round.

HEATH BEVERIDGE (Yarraville Club, Senior Division)

Enjoyed a career day as the Clubbers powered to a statement victory over fellow premiership contender Aberfeldie. The young gun finished with figures of 5-43 including the key scalp of Anthony Barton to announce his arrival as a player to watch this season.
