CAPTAIN Liam Murphy has lauded Brunswick’s bowling depth after spinner Tim Daykin highlighted his importance in the club’s 52-run victory over Preston on Saturday.

The Wicks boast a versatile bowling attack led by James Pearson and David McKay, with Leigh Brennan, Daykin and young gun Henry Robertson also called on during the Round 2 VSDCA victory against the Bullants.

Brennan and McKay combined for 58 wickets last summer, while Daykin snared 22 scalps.

The arrival of Pearson from Box Hill has relegated Brennan, a proven performer with the new ball, to first change in the Wicks’ attack.

Murphy said the paceman had embraced a change in role as part of the club’s three-pronged seam-bowling trio.

“Not only do we have a fairly mature bowling line-up, but we have also got some really understanding bowlers as well,” he said.

“If you have got blokes who potentially might take the new ball across other clubs and in other periods of Brunswick they have taken the new ball, for them to be selfless and comfortable with bowling second or third change when need be is a really positive thing for us.

“Very happy to have such selfless bowlers in our group and guys that can really execute.”

After Murphy’s knock of 76 led Brunswick to a total of 199 against Preston, the Bullants cruised to 1-60 in reply and were eyeing an upset victory.

That was until Brennan (3-25) and Daykin (2-23) engineered a stunning collapse of 4-1 as Preston crashed to 5-61 before being dismissed for 147.

How the ODI hundred has evolved

“Dayks was able to really put the brakes on and we were able to turn momentum our way after that,” Murphy said.

“Once we opened up a gap and an opportunity for a new batsman to come in, it created a pretty good opportunity for us to be pretty brutal with the ball.”

Brunswick sits fifth on the North-East ladder after two rounds, one of five unbeaten teams.

The Wicks welcome ladder leader Noble Park to A.G Gillon Oval for a one-day fixture this weekend.

“Every game is so important in shaping your season,” Murphy said.

“To get a double chance, you have got to win 10 games at a minimum and there’s only 13 games in a season.

“That means that everything is on the line every game.”
