SUNBURY Kangaroos coach Chris Meacham is hoping his side’s luck will turn as he looks to end his reign at the club on a high.
Meacham last week confirmed he would step down from the top job at season’s end, with the Kangaroos swiftly moving to advertise for a new senior coach.
With more shoulder surgery to come as a result of an accident on a farm at Wallan last year, Meacham said that the time was right to step aside after six seasons.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” he told Leader.
“I’ve got to get some surgery and the group’s had the same voice for so long. They wanted me to coach again next year, but it’s time to move on.”
The decision came six years after Meacham first walked into the club, promising president Alan Walters a premiership within three seasons.
He delivered that — off his own boot — in 2012 as the Kangaroos overcame Romsey by three points with a goal on the final siren from the key forward.
The Kangaroos were knocked out of the flag race in the preliminary final in 2013 and suffered an elimination final exit last year.
They had been tipped to be a premiership contender this season but have endured a wretched run of injuries which has left them needing to win at least two of their final four matches to make finals.
“For our twos, we had to call seven blokes on Saturday that haven’t played or have been away just to get the numbers,” Meacham said. “The club’s just in a really bad position at the moment.”
Sunbury Kangaroos fell to Macedon 4.8 (32) to 1.7 (13) at a muddy Tony Clarke Reserve on Saturday.
The Kangaroos, who have lost their last three matches, will tackle Diggers Rest this weekend before rounding out the regular season with clashes against Romsey, Rockbank and Riddell.
“We’re just wondering where our next win’s coming from and it’s not even a matter of looking at Rockbank like that because they beat us last year,” Meacham said.
“I love playing Diggers. There’s a good rivalry and everything there but we’ll have to scrape together a side just to make that game.”
