RIDDELL is flying under the radar in the Riddell District Football League.

And Bombers coach Troy Scoble does not mind it one bit.

All the talk over pre-season and during the opening rounds has been about the likes of Diggers Rest, Macedon, Sunbury Kangaroos and Romsey.

But Riddell — the competition’s 2013 premiers — has quietly gone about its business to post a 4-1 start to the season, proving it is again a genuine premiership contender.

“We’re pretty happy with that (flying under the radar) to be honest,” Scoble said.

“We’ve sort of been through that over the last couple of years. I think in 2013, we were a little bit the same, a bit under the radar. Then last year trying to go back-to-back there was a lot of focus on us, which we didn’t handle very well at all. But this year we’re a younger side and from our point of view we’ve just got to win the games that we can win and see what we can pinch when we play against a so-called better side of the comp.”

The Bombers’ latest success came against Lancefield on Saturday in a tight, contested, low-scoring affair.

The visitors came away with an 11.6 (76) to 8.7 (55) triumph, a five-goal-to-one second term setting up the win.

“It was a pretty good game of footy, actually,” Scoble said.
“We threatened to break the game open late in the second quarter but to Lancefield’s credit they really hung in there. So it made for a close game all day.”

Riddell had struggled to adjust to Lancefield’s extra numbers in defence early and went into quarter-time trailing by five points but soon gained control.

Tigers full-forward Jonathon Kent provided headaches for the Bombers throughout the day though, the big man keeping his side in the contest with six goals.

“He’s a terrific player,” Scoble said.

“Their forward line functioned really well to give him a lot of one-on-one contests and when he’s one-on-one, I don’t think it will matter which backman he plays on this year. He’s a very dangerous player.”

In just his sixth senior game of football, Tommy Alkemade was named the Bombers’ best while fellow midfielders Ben Peters and Haydn Ross also impressed.

Elsewhere, Sunbury Kangaroos thumped Wallan by 75 points, Broadford overcame Rockbank by 34 points, Romsey smashed Kilmore by 147 points, Rupertswood hammered Melton Centrals by 113 points and Diggers Rest took care of Woodend-Hesket by 92 points.
