YARRAVILLE Glory coach Paul Donnelly has conceded the club must consider reinforcing its striking stocks in an effort to climb out of the State League 1 North-West drop zone.

The Glory has had a testing start to the campaign and finds itself bottom of the table after eight rounds.

Yarraville claimed its first victory of the campaign on Saturday, knocking off Altona City 2-1.

The club moved to bolster its squad two weeks ago, bringing in midfielder Souleymane Cissoko from Western Suburbs.

But after scoring only twice before the weekend’s triumph, Donnelly said the Glory needed to weigh up its recruiting options.

“Defence and midfield we have got right,” he said.

“We are not scoring goals, so is that an area we need to work on? Yes. Do we need something different? Possibly.”

The Glory has been more resolute in defence since its 4-0 loss to Geelong in Round 2, keeping clean sheets against Banyule City and Hoppers Crossing but failing to secure three points.

“If we can strengthen the squad we will,” Donnelly said.

“But what we are saying at the moment is who comes in has to be better than what we have got. We will give our guys as much opportunity as possible but if it is not working, we will definitely look and get someone in there.”

Captain Steve Georgakakis has been at the forefront of Yarraville’s improved performances, producing several energetic displays in the heart of midfield.

“Stevey is a gun and he is Yarraville through and through,” Donnelly said.

“A lot of clubs don’t have that. When he plays well, we play well.

“When we are having a good patch, he’s involved in that. He’s involved in everything. I am just hoping he gets a goal or something happens and everyone will lift.”

Donnelly has faced a tough task since succeeding Tony Merakis five days before the start of the season.

“The belief is there. Once we get a win or we start hitting the back of the net I think we will get going,” he said.
