A NINTH-straight Riddell District Football League win for Riddell, Westmeadows’ upset Essendon District Football League triumph over Craigieburn and Norwood’s ominous effort against Noble Park headline this week’s Sunday Spotlight.
RDFL: Fine nine for flying Bombers
Riddell took another step toward a top-two finish in the RDFL with its ninth-straight victory. The Bombers saluted by 24 points against fourth-placed Rupertswood, continuing their scintillating run of form. Ben Peters impressed in the side’s 10.15 (75) to 7.9 (51) triumph.
EDFL: Westmeadows makes it mark
Westmeadows held Tullamarine at bay for another week in the race for EDFL Division 1 finals after breezing past top-two outfit Craigieburn at Willowbrook Reserve. After winning their first 10 matches, the Eagles have gone 2-3, allowing Essendon Doutta Stars to climb back to the top of the ladder. Westmeadows prevailed 21.11 (137) to 13.7 (85) on the back of seven majors from Cameron Trewin.
EFL: Norsemen flex their muscle
As far as overall team performances go, this was one of the best. Reigning Eastern Football League premier Norwood had Noble Park’s number throughout a battle of two of the competition’s heavyweights, turning on the afterburners in the second half to score a 46-point win, 13.12 (90) to 6.8 (44). The Bulls could only manage two goals to three-quarter-time as Norwood dished out a timely reminder of its quality.
YVMDFL: Emerald sends a message
Alexander Hellriegel and John Mackay snagged seven goals apiece as Emerald showcased its quality in a massive Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League win over Alexandra. Emerald had 20 goals by half-time and won by 209 points, 34.24 (228) to 3.1 (19). The ladder leader should get a greater test when it faces second-placed Kinglake this weekend in a Division 2 blockbuster.
WRFL: As Yze as it comes
Opposition coaches must have sleepless nights wondering who to send their No. 1 defender to before they tackle West Footscray. For much of the 2015 Western Region Football League season, Munir El Houli has been the player who has required the greatest planning to try and negate. But Damien Yze has rocketed to 63 goals over the past two weeks, slotting 11 against Sunshine Heights and seven in the Roosters’ win over cross-town rival North Footscray on Saturday.
RDFL: Kilmore finally on the board
There hasn’t been much to smile about for Kilmore over a difficult 2015 RDFL campaign. But the Blues had reason to celebrate on Saturday when they got the points against Melton Centrals. Kilmore triumphed 11.7 (73) to 7.6 (48), kicking seven goals to two in the second half at J.J Clancy Reserve. Adam Milne was named best afield for the victors.
One for the history books: St Patrick’s College Ballarat won its sixth-consecutive Herald Sun Shield on Saturday, beating Essendon Keilor College by 29 points at North Port Oval.
