Victorian Turf Cricket Association club East Keilor is mourning the loss of one of its legends.
David Hackney, 57, died on Friday, January 31 with memories of his cricket ability pouring in.
Hackney joined the club at the start of the 1977-78 season and would go onto have a long career many could only dream of.
He made his senior debut in season 1982-83 going onto be a two-time First XI premiership player and would captain the club for three seasons.
He was named in two Team of the Decades including 1976-1977 to 1985-1986 and 1986-1987 to 1995-1996.
Other accolades included winning the club’s First XI batting average on five occasions, a two-time club coach, 1994 club champion and the club’s highest First XI score of 210 not out.
Hackney was made a life member in 2007 and played his last game in 2013.
His career also included a stint with North Melbourne in district cricket.
Off the field he was a junior team manager and coach of three premiership teams and served on the committee.
“David was the first bloke I met when I first joined up at EKCC in the very early 90s,” Paul Louis Villani said.
“I’m positive I was the worst club cricketer he had ever seen at our first training session, yet, he encouraged and every net session he would spend 15 mins teaching me ways on how not to be the worst club cricketer he’d ever seen.”
Hackney’s funeral will be held on Thursday, February 13 at Moonee Valley Racecourse at 2pm.
