VFL: Lions in a boilover
This was Coburg’s finest hour. The Lions entered their clash with reigning VFL premier Footscray on the back of a 100-point hiding from Box Hill and with few tipsters giving them any hope. But Peter German’s side conjured an almighty turnaround to record a 48-point triumph at Piranha Park. Mark Orr gave a sign of things to come when he booted the first goal in the 15.13 (103) to 7.13 (55) win. Orr finished with four majors on a day Coburg may have officially announced its rebirth.
EFL: Bulls lose Valenti to knee knock
Noble Park expects to find out the extent of a knee injury to key on-baller Shane Valenti on Monday. The ball magnet was injured in the Bulls’ Eastern Football League victory over North Ringwood on Saturday. Noble Park has its fingers crossed, but fears Valenti will miss at least 2-3 weeks. In a bright spot for the Bulls, Sam Monaghan returned for his 100th match, gathering about 25 disposals in a 29-point win.
MPFNL: Sorrento star marks 400th in style
Move over Brent Harvey. As the North Melbourne champion prepared for his 400th AFL match against Brisbane, Sorrento’s Guy Stringer was marking the same milestone in style. The veteran snagged five goals in his side’s annihilation of Tyabb in the Nepean League. Myles Pitt slotted 10 majors and Leigh Poholke seven as Sorrento claimed a 195-point victory.
NFL: Eltham’s improvement on show
Eltham spent much of the 2014 season fighting to avoid relegation from Northern Football League Division 1. Fast forward 12 months and the Panthers have proved their mettle as a genuine top-five side. Eltham defeated reigning premier Greensborough by four points on Saturday despite a late scare. The Panthers led by 32 points at the final change before the visitors stormed home to get within a kick. Eltham is fourth with four matches to play.
EDFL: Tullamarine shocks flag contender
It appeared Essendon Doutta Stars had assumed flag favouritism in Essendon District Football League Division 1 after beating Craigieburn three weeks ago. Another side threw its hat into the ring on Saturday, with Tullamarine making a statement against the Stars. The Demons got home by 13 points, 11.16 (82) to 9.15 (69), as Scott Mcallester slotted five goals. Tullamarine is fifth on the ladder after Round 15. Craigieburn jumped back to the summit after defeating East Keilor.
YVMDFL: Olinda Ferny Creek’s revival
Olinda Ferny Creek found itself at a crossroads after Round 7, with their season seemingly shot at 2-5. But the Bloods have since been one of the form teams in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League, stringing together six wins in their past seven fixtures. The club’s only loss since May 30 came against second-placed Monbulk by 22 points in Round 12. Olinda sits fifth and appears to be a team to watch over the remaining rounds.
