Serial sex fiend dad Paul Romijn admits raping 13-year-old girl

After almost four decades a serial sex fiend father from Sunshine has finally been brought to justice for raping a 13-year-old girl who he taunted by saying he’ll never be caught.

A Sunshine father who raped a 13-year-old girl has been brought before a court four decades on, having since assaulted two others.

Paul Robert Romijn, 56, fronted the County Court on Thursday, November 12, where he pleaded guilty to taking part in an act of sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.

Romijn was 16 when he raped the girl in Sunshine in 1981 after they played a game of ‘chase’.

During the game he caught up with the girl and tickled her, holding her arms above her head, before he began having sex with her.

The court heard the girl struggled, but he continued, pushing his bodyweight down on her.

Romijn left the girl distressed and bleeding.

She faced the court to tell how Romijn stole her innocence and how his actions still significantly affected her psychologically, physically and financially.

The woman told the court after the crime she had said to Romijn, “You’re a rapist,” to which he had replied, “Yeah, and what are you going to do about it?”

The court heard Romijn had subsequent convictions for similar offences relating to two victims from when he was 21, for which he was sent to Pentridge prison.

His lawyer said he hadn’t reoffended in more than 30 years and was deeply and genuinely remorseful.

The court heard the married father-of-three had an intellectual disability and was illiterate.

It was heard Romijn was the son of a minister and had been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

His lawyer pushed for him to be handed a wholly suspended sentence.

He will return to court for sentencing on November 25.
