A Roxburgh Park thug who kidnapped, bashed and taunted a man during an “absurd” attempt to extort cash has been jailed.

Angelo Odisho, 21, was sentenced in the County Court on Monday to a minimum 18 months’ jail after pleading guilty kidnapping and recklessly causing injury.

Odisho attempted to extort cash from a former high school mate after lending the man $1000.

The thug rang his ex-mate and told him he owed $8000 interest on the loan.

The victim, who paid his debt back within a week, told Odisho to “get f***ed”.

Odisho warned the man to “pay the money” or he will “come and get him”.

The victim and some friends drove to Hothlyn Drive Reserve on December 22, 2019.

Odisho rocked up soon after with two carloads of thugs.

The thug and seven others surrounded the victims’s car.

“F***ing dog, it’s time to pay up now,” Odisho said.

Odisho threatened to stab his victim and “f*** his mother”, the court was told.

“You’re f***ed you can’t run anywhere now,” Odisho said.

Odisho and three others punched the victim through the car window.

The victim’s friends tried to help but backed off when Odisho and two others pulled out knives, the court heard.

The victim got out of the car but was punched, kicked then shoved into Odisho’s Nissan Pulsar.

The car was driven away with the victim in the middle of the back seat.

Odisho, who filmed the kidnapping on an iPhone, called his bloodied victim a “dog”.

The footage, played to court, depicted Odisho demanding his victim call himself a dog.

“Say I’m a dog,” Odisho said repeatedly.

The thugs bashed their victim while driving to Roxburgh Park sporting fields.

“Take me home to get the .22 so I can put one in his leg,” Odisho said.

“Too far away, he’s not worth it,” another thug replied.

Odisho pulled out a VicRoads transfer form and forced his victim to sign it.

Odisho said he wanted $8000 within a month or he would keep the car.

The victim contacted police after he was dropped off and taken to hospital.

Police arrested Odisho at the Roxburgh Park Secondary College carpark early the next day. Police seized a flick-knife and clothing from Odisho’s Pulsar.

Odisho told police he’d never heard of the Hothlyn Drive Reserve, denied being in any car, denied knowing or assaulting the victim, denied having a flick knife and said no one owed him money.

Odisho, who has priors for recklessly cause injury and affray, was bailed in February last year but later remanded for subsequent offending.

The court heard Odisho hoped to complete his plumbing qualification but heavy drug use had limited his employment opportunities.

Judge David Sexton said during this month’s plea hearing the fact the kidnapping happened in company, a flick-knife was present and some “unsavoury” words were said aggravated the offending.

Barrister Damian Sheales, for Odisho, said the demands (for cash) were “clearly absurd”.

“Clearly my client was desperate for money,” Mr Sheales said.

“It’s almost the apprentice gangster feeling (in the lead up to the offending).”

Judge Sexton also queried a reference to Odisho owning a cleaning business.

“If he had a cleaning business, I’m not convinced a lot of cleaning was going on,” Mr Sheales said.

Odisho, who appeared via videolink from Ravenhall Correctional, was jailed for a maximum two years and six months.

He had spent 168 days in custody.
