Footscray High School students will be the coolest kids on the block thanks to a trendy new uniform next year.

And the new high school, which will open for term one next year, enlisted some crafty primary school students to design the new threads.

Fashionistas from Footscray Primary School and Footscray City Primary School let their creative juices flow for the project, helping choose the fabrics and ensure the designs were comfortable.

The new uniform includes a sleeveless puffer jacket, scarfs, ties, waterproof jacket, beanie and an array of different types of hats as well as a core uniform.

Footscray High School principal Frank Vetere said the uniform was gender neutral and any item could be worn at any time of the year.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to develop a new culture and to show some pride in our new school colours,” he said.

“We’ve come up with a cool new uniform with lots of accessories.”

The design process took about a month after community consultation on the colour palette and lots of input from the primary school students.

Mr Vetere said the Year 7 students were “very excited” to wear the new uniform with pride.

“The new uniform really brings us together,” he said.

“We also wanted to ensure it was ethically sourced and it was affordable, access to uniform is very important.”

Footscray City Primary School student Anh-Thu, who helped design the uniform, said she had a lot of fun helping choose the new uniform.

“My favourite part was that we can have a voice about what we wear next year, and making sure everybody is comfortable in what they’re wearing,” she said.

The 11-year-old said she liked the new sports uniform the best.

“It stands out to show others that we’re our own school and that we’re unique,” Anh-Thu said.

Student Will, 12, who also helped out with the designs, said although he had a great time he didn’t think he was cut out for a future in design.

“I am not very good at art which is a big factor of designing,” he said.

“I would like to be a guitar player.”

Footscray High School will open for term one next year and is the merger of Gilmore College for Girls and Footscray City College.

The new uniforms will be manufactured by the end of the year and ready for the new students to wear in January.
