One person is under arrest after crashing a stolen car in Melbourne’s northern suburbs following a high-speed police pursuit.

The police Air Wing spotted a grey BMW wagon hooning at dangerous speeds in Southbank at 1.30am on Tuesday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the car allegedly did 120km/h in a 40km/h zone and failed to stop at several red traffic lights in Richmond.

Highway patrol officers then tried to intercept the BMW on Nicholson St in Fitzroy North but failed to stop the car.

Police on the road then disengaged, and Air Wing continued following the car as it travelled at high speeds.

The pursuit ended when the BMW wagon crashed into a coffee shop at the intersection of Nicholson and Miller streets

“A 43-year-old man of no fixed address is arrested and taken to hospital for observation under police guard,” the police spokeswoman said.

The BMW wagon is believed to have been stolen in Highett on 8 June.

The man is expected to be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and multiple driving, drug and weapon offences.

Investigators urge anyone with information, dashcam or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
