Police believe the woman forced the front door open with a blunt instrument then approached the till, stealing its contents before making a getaway.

Pet’s Haven chief executive Trish Burke said staff were worried in the days after the break and enter.

“To steal from an animal shelter is a pretty low act,” she said.

Ms Burke said volunteers noticed missing items when they came into work on Sunday morning. Security cameras then revealed the rest of the story.

“It’s somebody who someone knows. We think it was appalling and obviously we won’t let it rest until we know who was responsible.”

Footage shows the woman walking through a number of other rooms in the shelter before leaving the premises.

No animals were harmed or disturbed during the robbery.

“She didn’t look at the animals when she walked in. She had no interest in the animals,” Ms Burke said.

The shelter’s Facebook call-out posted on Sunday afternoon has already gained over 4000 shares.

“Pet’s Haven has a pretty large network. The outcry is quite evident on our social media channels. We would just really like to know why.”

Macedon Ranges CIU detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic said police wanted to speak with the woman in the CCTV footage.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.”
