Passers-by have been forced to intervene in an altercation between a man and a woman in the early hours of Thursday in Essendon.

It is alleged the man entered a Pascoe Vale Road property through the back around 6am before being confronted by a male at the property and left.

However, a woman arrived at the Pascoe Road property later where a verbal altercation occurred between the man and a woman. The man allegedly threatened to sexually assault the woman and grabbed her.

Passers-by saw the scuffle and contacted the police who shortly arrived at the Pascoe Vale Road property.

The 57-year-old woman was treated for injuries at the scene as well as the man.

Detectives from the Moonee Valley Crime Investigation Unit charged a 30-year-old man with sexual assault, threaten to commit a sexual assault, intent to cause injury, recklessly cause injury, cruelty to animal and other charges.

He faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
