Passers-by have been forced to intervene in an altercation between a man and a woman in the early hours of Thursday in Essendon.
It is alleged the man entered a Pascoe Vale Road property through the back around 6am before being confronted by a male at the property and left.
However, a woman arrived at the Pascoe Road property later where a verbal altercation occurred between the man and a woman. The man allegedly threatened to sexually assault the woman and grabbed her.
Passers-by saw the scuffle and contacted the police who shortly arrived at the Pascoe Vale Road property.
The 57-year-old woman was treated for injuries at the scene as well as the man.
Detectives from the Moonee Valley Crime Investigation Unit charged a 30-year-old man with sexual assault, threaten to commit a sexual assault, intent to cause injury, recklessly cause injury, cruelty to animal and other charges.
He faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
