A tow truck driver was on meth when he struck and killed a cyclist in Pascoe Vale on Tuesday afternoon, the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court has heard.
Meadow Heights man Mendo Vrskovski, 48, successfully applied for bail on Wednesday afternoon after he was charged by police with dangerous driving causing death for the incident, which occurred on the corner of Melville Rd and Brearley Pde at 1.03pm on Tuesday
Detective Senior Constable Holly Gibson from Victoria Police’s Major Crash Investigations Division said Mr Vrskovski was working when he turned right onto Melville Rd off Brearley Pde, allegedly not seeing the 43-year-old Brunswick West cyclist travelling north on Melville Rd.
Sen-Constable Gibson said Mr Vrskovski was working for his employer at the time, All Suburbs Towing based in Brunswick, and was driving a tow-truck to a repair depot in Brunswick.
She said that the victim was “dragged” for multiple metres beneath Mr Vrskovski’s truck and died at the scene.
Sen-Constable Gibson told the court the accused, who stopped his car and assisted after the collision, tested positive to meth at the scene.
She said Mr Vrskovski allegedly refused to undergo a blood test at the Fawkner police station that afternoon, where he also told police that he did not see the cyclist.
William Barker, for Vrskovski, said his client could remain employed at All Suburbs Towing based as a “jockey,” meaning he would not be required to drive.
His Honour Michael Burke said the offending was “serious” but said the fact that Mr Vrskovski owned a home and was “gainfully employed” worked in his favour.
Mr Vrskovski, who did not enter a plea on Wednesday, will return to court on August 16 for a committal hearing.
