Lovers of independent cinema in Melbourne’s north west are in for a treat, with a Palace Cinema to be included in a massive new Penny Lane development.
Stretching between Puckle St and Young St in Moonee Ponds, the development will house a range of cafes and apartments in addition to the cinema.
Moonee Valley Mayor Cam Nation said he hoped the development would help revitalise the local economy.
“It’s always great to see new businesses and developments coming to our municipality and contributing to our local economy,” Cr Nation said.
According to Palace Cinemas, the 12-screen cinema complex is set to open its doors by the end of the year, with the rest of the development to be completed by August 2022.
Palace chief executive Benjamin Zeccola said: “We have longed for a home in Melbourne’s West for a while now, when the opportunity arose to be part of a stylish new development in Puckle Street it was perfect — and where better than the birth place of Australian culture queen Dame Edna Everage.”
