No Aldi store for Glenroy as the German supermarket cancels Moreland Council land deal

DESPITE negotiating a land deal with Moreland Council last year, an Aldi supermarket will not be built in Glenroy after the group pulled out recently.

THE long-awaited Aldi supermarket in Glenroy will not go ahead after the German based supermarket chain pulled out of its promised site.

The supermarket was due to be built at 358 Waterloo Rd after a land deal was negotiated with Moreland Council in August of last year.

As part of the proposition with land owners Lay Brothers, council land at 366-370 Waterloo Rd was set to be leased for a carpark.

It is believed 39 of the 100 carpark spaces at the supermarket would have been on council land.

According to council director of corporate services James Scott, without the discount supermarket on the site, the deal would now be reneged.

“In August of last year council resolved to sell part of its land at 366-370 Waterloo Rd in Glenroy to Lay Brothers for the purpose of building an Aldi store,” Mr Scott said.

“To date the sale and lease of council land at 366-370 Waterloo Rd — which is dependent on the land being used for an Aldi store — is yet to be finalised.”

An Aldi spokeswoman confirmed the plans to open in Glenroy were “no longer proceeding”.

Instead, it would continue to investigate potential locations in the area, she said.

It is not the first time an attempt for an Aldi store in Glenroy has fallen over.

A proposition for council land to be sold in Blair Ave for a carpark was knocked back by the council in 2004.

The Glenroy location would have been Moreland’s second Aldi store.

It also has a store in Sydney Rd, Brunswick.
