STUDENTS in Coburg can roll into class with the opening of a new bike shelter and workshop.

The shelter opened at Coburg High School thanks to $15,000 from the RACV and donations from local businesses.

The dome shelter allows students to chain and lock their bikes securely after being forced to lock them onto trees and fences in the past.

An old shipping container has been converted into a workspace and includes a workbench and tools to allow students to fix any issues they have with their bikes.

The school’s Cycling and Active Travel Committee has also added 20 second-hand bikes, which are awaiting repair in the workshop.

School principal Stewart Millner said active transport was a priority.

“It is really pleasing to see an increase in the numbers of students cycling, scooting and skating to school here,” he said.

The school will take part in the national Ride to School day on Friday.

The initiative, run by Bicycle Network, aims to see 500,000 students pedal to school in a bid to combat childhood obesity.
