AN OUTDOOR splash play area, upgrades to indoor and outdoor pools, and a new 200-space carpark are among plans for a $50 million overhaul of the East Keilor Leisure Centre.

The new plans, given the stamp of approval by the Moonee Valley Council last week, also include steam and sauna rooms, and an outdoor leisure pool.

But costs for the project have jumped more than $12 million since it was first priced in late 2016.

Moonee Valley Deputy Mayor Samantha Byrne said the project was an investment for the municipality’s future.

“This is a huge infrastructure project for Moonee Valley, and it’s very exciting it’s finally coming,” Cr Byrne said.

“We want it to last for the next 50 years plus, and we want to do it right.”

The new costings allow for design, construction, and cost escalation, and include features that were previously excluded from the 2016 plan.

These include costing for furniture, fittings and equipment, gymnasium equipment, a new substation and management of adverse soil conditions.

Moonee Valley Mayor John Sipek said the council was confident it could cover the extra cost.

The updated cost plan, along with a detailed design, will go before the council for endorsement in July.

The council have committed to redeveloping the centre by June 2021.
