Mickleham Primary School: Mystery flood shuts off staff carpark

A mystery flood rumoured to have been started by a plumber leaving a tap on has forced teachers out of their carpark at a school in Melbourne’s northwest.

A primary school in Melbourne’s northwest has dodged questions over the cause of a flood that forced it to shut off its staff carpark.

Mickleham Primary School has set up a new area for staff parking following the flooding during the recent school holidays.

Details of the incident first emerged on 3AW’s rumour file on Thursday, when a caller claimed a plumber left a tap on at a water tank during a visit.

A large water tank is located next to the teachers’ carpark, and large puddles were visible at its entrance and on the nearby road when Leader visited on Thursday.

Acting principal Julie Le Guen said she was “not going to be able to have a conversation” with Leader over the incident, and referred questions to the Department of Education’s media team.

A department spokeswoman confirmed “minor” flooding occurred in the carpark during the term two school holidays, but no buildings were damaged.

The department did not address questions related to the exact date or cause of the flood, or how long the carpark might be out of use.

“There was no damage to the school and the water damage to the car park is being rectified,” the spokeswoman said.

The Victorian School Building Authority or the school are not liable for the costs to repair the carpark.
