A Brunswick East comedian is baring her soul from behind a costume as she asks herself, How Gay am I?
Born in India and raised in Thailand before attending college in the United States, Sunanda Sachatrakul first confronted the idea of whether there was a scale to being queer when she came out to her family.
“That’s something my brother asked me, ‘what percentage of me is straight?’” she said.
“I thought about that quite a bit. If I am attracted to Channing Tatum is that because of his looks or because he’s a good dancer? Does that make me more or less gay?”
Sachatrakul’s Melbourne Fringe Festival show will address that question while she performs as various characters, including a cruise ship singer and a member of the “beef police”, a closeted character working in India.

“Because you are behind a mask, you can allow yourself to be so much more vulnerable,” Sachatrakul said.
“I tell people in the show that all these characters may seem absurd but every one of them is a part of me.”
How Gay am I?runs from September 9 to 15 at the Butterfly Club.
