Man jailed over ‘frightening’ Kings Park home invasion of mother and kids

A Kings Park mum with two young children woke up to find an ice-addicted party boy in her room with her purse in his mouth. And his disturbing behaviour only escalated after she chased him out of the house.

A frightened mother chased off a drug-addicted burglar as her children slept, only for the party boy fiend to come at her with a bat and drive at her in a stolen car.

Kings Park mum Leanne Hayek was asleep with her four-month-old baby and 8-year-old daughter when ice-riddled crook Billie Comensoli broke into their home, a court heard.

Comensoli was on a one-man crime spree when he woke the startled mother just after 10.30pm on July 19, 2018.

Ms Hayek saw a “shadow” then screamed when she realised Comensoli was in her room with her Mimco purse in his mouth.

She chased him outside to a Toyota Yaris he had stolen earlier.

Ms Hayek attempted to grab the steering wheel but Comensoli chased her back to the house.

The fiend then ran back to the car and grabbed what Ms Hayek believed was a bat.

Comensoli jumped back in the car, hit the accelerator and drove it towards Ms Hayek.

The mum had to jump behind some rubbish bins to avoid him.

The crook drove away but was later spotted by police who took “evasion action” when Comensoli reversed the stolen Yaris towards them.

He was eventually arrested in Sunshine North on June 21 following his two-day rampage which began when he stole the Yaris from the Bells Hotel carpark in South Melbourne.

Comensoli, 27, was sentenced in the County Court on October 24 to a minimum 20 months’ prison after pleading guilty to several charges including aggravated burglary.

Judge Trevor Wraight said there was little evidence Comensoli showed “genuine remorse” and his actions must have been “frightening” for Ms Hayek.

“It is self-evident that anyone in their own home at night being confronted with a person near their bedroom door, would instil significant fear,” he said.

“Further, at the time, Ms Hayek was in her home with two young children.”

Judge Wraight disagreed with Comensoli’s defence counsel who submitted the offending was at the “lower end”.

“The fact that you jimmied the front door, the fact that you entered at night, and the fact that in the course of stealing the items there was the confrontation with Ms Hayek, in my view elevates your offending,” he said.

The court heard Comensoli – who has an “extensive criminal history” – had been addicted to drugs since he was a teenager.

He regularly used GHB and meth and was fired from one job because he would often show up “hungover”.

Comensoli, who also pleaded guilty to several counts of theft and other charges, was sentenced to a maximum three years and three months’ prison.

He had spent 462 days in custody at the time of sentencing.
