An unhinged syringe-wielding junkie threatened to infect Kmart staff with HIV after he was stopped for shoplifting.

Russell Aldcroft was on bail when he entered the Keilor Central Kmart on March 6 this year.

Aldcroft fleeced the store of several items including clothing, a pair of shoes and a hat.

He put the items in a bag and left the store but was approached by two Kmart loss prevention officers, Valentina Dimovska and Larissa Sinnott, and a security guard.

Aldcroft handed his bag to Ms Sinnott but immediately demanded it back.

He put his hand in his pocket and told them he had a syringe and he had HIV.

The trio backed off but Aldcroft flicked the syringe cap off.

“I want my bag give it to me or I’ll stab you,” Aldcroft said.

He then lunged at Ms Sinnott.

“Give me the f****n bag,” he said.

Aldcroft fled on a bus but was arrested not long after.

“What can I say, I f****d up,” he said during his police interview.

Aldcroft, 26, was sentenced in the County Court on October 18 to 15 months’ prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery.

Judge Susan Pullen said the facts of the matter were “most serious and disturbing”.

She warned Aldcroft to address his drug problems or else.

“I’ve got absolutely no doubt you’re going to be back before the courts being charged with further offending and you’ll keep going back to jail,” she said.

“Your current offending represents an escalation in your offending behaviour.”

Aldcroft, who also pleaded guilty to committing an offence while on bail, was jailed for 15 months and placed on a two-year community corrections order when he gets out.

Judge Pullen took extra time to explain the conditions of the CCO to Aldcroft.

“I know you have already been on one of these orders and you breached it monumentally in my opinion and if you come back before you going to go at real risk of jail,” she said.

Judge Pullen was also concerned with Aldcroft’s “disturbing and relevant criminal history”.

Aldcroft had spent 226 days in custody at the time of sentencing.
