A  TRENCH 10m deep and 900m long will house the new rail line under Camp Rd when the Campbellfield grade separation is finished in 2019.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority has revealed work will start on the project later this year.

Excavators, bulldozers and haulage trucks will be used to lower the rail line below Camp Rd.

During the peak construction period, the authority expects to have several hundred workers on-site.

Authority project director Michael Caink said the Camp Rd crossing caused traffic congestion every day and put lives at risk.

In the past decade, there have been three collisions and 17 near-misses at the crossing, while boom gates have been hit twice by vehicles in the past month.

“Removing this crossing will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make Campbellfield safer – and we’re looking forward to starting work later this year,” Mr Caink said.

The cost of the Campbellfield crossing removal is set to be determined through a tender process.

The authority has also told Leader that no private land or property is expected to be acquired for this project.

Mr Caink said the authority was still planning how to best handle traffic while the new line was being built but they aimed to keep it “moving and minimise disruptions to busy Camp Rd”. The Campbellfield level crossing will be the first of five to go in the northwestern suburbs.

Other crossings to be removed as part of the State Government project include Buckley St in Essendon, Glenroy Rd in Glenroy, Bell St in Coburg and Moreland Rd in Brunswick.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said there had been “numerous near-misses at the Camp Rd level crossing in recent months”.

“We’re removing this dangerous relic of the past as soon as possible, and future-proofing the project for the upgrades we’ll need as our community grows,” Ms Allan said.
