Bikie gangs ‘much more active’ in Victoria

A Melbourne bikie boss charged with a menacing $200,000 extortion plot has been allowed lighter curfew hours so he can run his doughnut shop.

Hells Angels Nomad chapter president Jasmin Destanovic is accused of extorting his alleged victim between October 2020 and March last year.

Destanovic was granted bail in March last year with strict conditions including he be home between 11pm and 6am and not travel further than 5km from his residence.

Destanovic, 43, fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday seeking bail be altered so he can work at his Nuts for Donuts Kealba store.

The defence submitted at an earlier application Destanovic, of Keilor Downs, was “required” to be a “retail worker” at the store Sunday to Wednesday 2pm to midnight and Thursday to Saturday 2pm to 2am.

Nuts for Donuts director Kosta Civof, who the court heard has known Destanvoic for more than 20 years but was “not a member of any particular club”, testified on behalf of his mate.

Mr Civof, who owns the lease, has the food premises registration in his name and paid for part of the shop fit-out, said the Kealba store had been “exceeding expectations”.

Mr Civof told the court the “handshake” arrangement was Destanovic ran the shop but “exclusively” purchased and collected doughnuts from the Nuts for Donuts Thomastown factory.

Mr Civof, who the court heard has convictions for “tax” offending, said the Thomastown factory is open 24/7 and Destanovic would need to make 3 to 4 pick ups a day.

“Jasmin is running the store if they (other Nuts for Donuts operators) don’t meet the expectations I can walk in and take the lease,” Mr Civof said.

Mr Civof also confirmed “only a man” can handle doughnut collections.

“There’s large crates … it’s his (Destanovic) job,” Mr Civof.

Magistrate Timothy Bourke, who lashed the defence’s first bail variation application heard last week, allowed Destanovic to extend his curfew to 11pm to 4pm.

Magistrate Bourke also allowed Destanovic to travel “in the most direct route” to and from Kealba and Thomastown to collect doughnuts.

Destanovic, who is charged with multiple extortion offences, and patched Hells Angels Amad Dashtani and Jinwar Arian allegedly menaced the man and threatened his family.

Destanovic allegedly picked up the man from the Monash Children’s Hospital following the birth of the man’s baby and demanded $150,000, before stabbing him in the arm and threatening to cut his fingers off on December 20, 2020.

The alleged victim later received menacing messages after he failed to pay the ransom.

“I’m sending the boys tonight to your mum in law … if you don’t reply you will call us crying and begging us to stop … think about (your newborn baby girl),” the messages allegedly read.

The man had already allegedly been forced to pay $50,000 after his ordeal commenced outside a Mill Park convenience store on October 22.

It’s alleged Arian told the alleged victim he had three days to cough up the cash for gang protection.

“We know who you are, we know where you live, we know your girlfriends, we know you are waiting for a baby, we know your family,” Arian allegedly told the man.

The man, who knew Dashtani’s co-accused wife Shayma Hussein, told police he did not owe any of the alleged extortionists a debt.

The court heard the man gave $30,000 in borrowed money to the gang and was forced to transfer ownership of his car into the name of a gang member’s mother.

Destanovic will front court at a later date.
