A family has begun the task of rebuilding their lives after a blaze destroyed their home west of Melbourne last week.
Melton South couple, Carlo and Georgette Sant, and their three children are thankful to still have each other but have been shattered by the fire that took everything from them when it tore through their home last week.
The family has called Melton home for almost nine years and while they are taking it day by day amid a cloud of sadness and confusion, they are thankful for their community and neighbours for their support.
Emergency service crews attended the Monash St property about 10.30am on Thursday.
No one was home at the time and no pets were injured during the incident.
However, the fire destroyed the house and everything inside.
A GoFundMe set up in the aftermath had raised $2,300 by Tuesday morning, with the goal of $10,000 to provide a “safety net” for the family.
Georgette Sant said she had left her house as anyone else would that morning, but within 15 minutes she had received a call that it was on fire.
“The drive back has never felt so long, I could see the smoke growing as I got closer and I was just praying that someone had got it wrong but when I arrived my heart sank, I felt like I was outside my body,” Mrs Sant said.
“When we inspected the damage all I could think this is our worst nightmare, I would not wish it upon my worst enemy,” she said.
“I want to thank the man who called the firies, and also found a way to get the message to me, we are so grateful to him and to all the emergency services.”
Mrs Sant said she did not know how the fire started but they know it began in the roof of the house and quickly spread before engulfing the property.
She was grateful and felt “someone was watching over us” as the fire did not happen at night or when everyone was home.
Daughter Louise said on the donation page that the family must now begin the painful process of grieving for what they had lost and to begin the journey of rebuilding their lives and home.
“I’ve created this to help provide Dad and Georgette with a safety net to immediately help make this stressful time a little more manageable and bearable, and help get them back on their feet,” Ms Sant said.
“We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any donation, and if you are unable to donate please share this gofundme and keep them in your prayers,” she said.
