Friendly atmosphere, service a winning combination in one-pub towns

THE demise of the Romsey Hotel does not signal the end for hotels in one-pub towns in the Macedon Ranges, passionate publicans say.

THE recent demise of the Romsey Hotel does not signal the end of pubs in the Macedon Ranges, publicans say.

While the rise of cafe culture and tightening household budgets are factors, a quality product and community atmosphere remained a winning combination, the pub owners told the Leader.

Macedon Railway Hotel publican Rod Hughes said he had never been interested in quick fixes such as pokies or the TAB.

Instead, concentrating on trying different things such as pool and salsa nights to get people through the door was the way to go, he said.

“Some of it is hit and miss, but we can ensure beautiful meals and service and a down-to-earth atmosphere,” he said.

Mr Hughes said the hotel’s long history in town, including as a sanctuary during the Ash Wednesday fires, ensured locals retained an affection for it.

Riddells Creek Hotel publican Carolyn Trodd said country pubs remained a vital social hub.

“I’ve seen the effect that pokies have in country towns and it is never something I’d do as they kill country towns,” she said.

“As a publican you want to create a family atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

“If you get it right you have people getting to know each other, looking out for each other and helping each other.

“If the country pub ceases to exist the community become strangers to each other.”

Lancefield Hotel manager Kane Williams said a “dining focus” was the priority at his pub.

“We are doing 1100 to 1300 meals a week, which is great for business,” he said.

“Whether people stay for a few drinks or punt on the TAB is a bonus, but it’s not something we rely on.”

Cafes did take some business but this could be countered by encouraging families to visit for lunch or dinner, Mr Williams said.

Macedon Railway Hotel regular Rob Cornish said catching up with mates was still something only pubs could provide.

“For tradies, it’s always been a great way to get some help on a job or find some work – you never know where a conversation could lead,” he said.

Malmsbury Hotel & Motel’s David Duncan said there was no doubt pubs still had a future.

“Just run a good tight ship and good service and you won’t have a problem,” he said.
