Golden syrup, dirt and bread aren’t regular props used in the circus, but Sensory Decadence isn’t a regular show.

In fact, Coburg performer Latonya Wigginton guaranteed the audience will see something they have never seen before in the show.

Wigginton said the show aimed to share experiences with those watching and acted as a degustation menu for the audience.

“We’ve been in rehearsals for about two months, a lot of it is golden syrup and dirt and bread and the feeling of those things and what it feels like to interact with them,” she said.

A workshop in her home state of Queensland first drew Wigginton to the circus and from the age of 12 she was hooked.

Study in the ring brought her to China, before she settled in Melbourne and joined circus company One Fell Swoop.

“I tried gymnastics and ballet and found them restrictive and not very fun,” she said.

“I studied at school for a year and fell in love with the Chinese culture and Beijing and had another year living there and performing.

“Australian circus is more focused on the concept of the show and what you’re getting across while Chinese is more about regiment.”

Sensory Decadence will run from August 16 to 23 at Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park. Tickets: onefellswoopcircus.com
