SHE gave up running for five years but that hasn’t stopped Anna Kasapis from becoming a world champion.
Earlier this month, the Westmeadows mum won gold in the 1500m for ages 35-39 at the biannual World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth.
Ms Kasapis said she had been passionate about athletics ever since the age of 18, but took a five-year break to have her children.
Three years ago she started training again, competing with Athletics Essendon and training with a squad coached by Gregor Gojrzewski.
Earlier this year, Ms Kasapis placed second at the Victorian open mile championships and sixth in the 1500m at the Victorian open championships.
“Now to win the world championship in my age category, it has been a great journey,” she said.
During her day-to-day life, Ms Kasapis is a health and physical education teacher at Kilvington Grammar School in Ormond.
“I have been re-watching my race with my students and the staff at Kilvington Grammar all week, as they have enjoyed sharing my achievement,” she said.
